Easter Treasures: A tour of Madrid´s most emblematic churches

Madrid hides centuries of history among its churches, and at Easter, these temples become scenes of devotion and art. From small chapels to majestic basilicas, each one holds a unique story.

A symbol of Madrid, the Almudena Cathedral was the setting for the wedding of the current King and Queen of Spain. It took 110 years to build and it is the only cathedral consecrated by a Pope outside of Rome. Located opposite from the Royal Palace, its imposing presence makes it a must-see.

In the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a royal tradition is maintained: the queens and princesses of Asturias present the princes and infants here after their births, as Don Felipe and Doña Letizia did with Leonor and Sofía.

With its 80-metre-high tower made entirely out of bricks, the Parroquia de Santa Cruz is one of the tallest in Madrid. Inside, the Christ of the Alabarderos is the protagonist of one of the most emblematic processions during Holy Week.

The Pontificial Basilica of San Miguel is unique in Madrid for preserving its original design intact. It has a surprising Baroque façade and its original door dating back to 1746, also housing authentic artistic gems inside.

Finally, a few steps from Urso Hotel & Spa the Church of Santa Bárbara is located, which stands out as one of the most elegant in the city due to its façade. Its imposing staircase and its interior full of history invite you to make a stop and discover it.

To discover these churches is to explore living history of Madrid, where art, tradition and spirituality are intertwined. This Easter, let yourself be surrounded by their beauty and make each visit a journey through time.
